Diploma

The medical office specialist program is a great way to get started on a career in health care—the fastest-growing industry in the United States. The U.S. Department of Labor says today's health care workers are getting more training, in part because the skills they need are becoming more complex.* Many people begin training for a health care career while they are working in another career field. At Texas School of Business, our flexible schedules allow you to take classes during the day or in the evening, so you can start preparing for your future as a medical office specialist without interfering with your job schedule and other obligations.

A Curriculum Focused on Developing Skills

As a student of our medical office specialist program, your training will focus on the needs of today's rapidly changing medical office. In addition to developing skills in office administration, medical transcription, communication, and medical office operations, specific courses may include:

  • Fundamentals of health care
  • Health insurance theory and claims management
  • Legal aspects of health care, including HIPAA, OSHA, legal responsibility, professional liability, cultural diversity, contracts, and other applications of law in medicine
  • Medical emergencies, including hands-on training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid
  • Use of computer software for word processing and managing office finances

What Will You Do on the Job?

When you graduate from this program you may qualify for a variety of position titles, such as administrative secretaries, receptionists, unit/ward secretaries, accounting clerks, medical billing specialists, medical claims analysts, medical office coders, or office supervisors. Specific duties often depend on the size of the organization but may include filing insurance claims, CPT and ICD-9 coding, classifying patient files into diagnosis-related groupings (DRGs), medical transcription, accounts payable and receivable, patient files and filing systems, payroll and financial statements, and reception duties.

 Requirements for Graduation

Prior to receiving your diploma, you will be required to complete a supervised externship to gain real-world experience by applying the administrative skills you learn in class at an approved medical facility in the Houston area. To get started, contact Texas School of Business today.
